Why You Keep Getting Set Back in Fitness (And It's Not What You Think)

Read Time: 3 Minutes OR, Listen

It Usually Doesn’t Fall Apart All at Once
For most women, setbacks in a fitness program or schedule don’t look like quitting.
It looks like this:
  • The routine is setting in
  • You feel a little momentum
  • Things begin to click
And then something happens.
You get sick.
You tweak something.
Life shifts.
And suddenly…
👉 You’re out of rhythm again
And after a few cycles of this, it starts to feel like:

“Why can’t I just stay consistent?”

This Is More Common Than You Think
I see this all the time.
Not with people who don’t care--
But with people who do.

My personal training clients, or anyone investing in their personal fitness, who are:
  • Motivated
  • Willing
  • Ready to make changes
But keep getting interrupted.

Sometimes it’s illness.
Sometimes it’s fatigue.
And very often…
👉 It’s injury

And Not the Kind You Expect
What surprises most people is this:
The injuries don’t usually happen in the gym.
They happen in everyday life.

I’ve had clients who:
  • Broke a collarbone because a dog pulled suddenly on a leash
  • Twisted an ankle stepping off a curb
  • Injured a foot hiking without proper support
  • Dropped something heavy and created a setback that lasted weeks

These aren’t extreme situations.
They’re normal moments.

But they happen in bodies that aren’t fully supported yet.

This Isn’t Bad Luck
It can feel random.
But often, it’s not.

When the body is:
  • Deconditioned
  • Lacking strength in key areas
  • Not well-supported structurally
Small things become big problems.

Not because you’re fragile--
But because the body hasn’t been prepared for those moments.

And Then the Cycle Begins
Once something like this happens:
  • You stop for a few days
  • Then a few weeks
  • Then it feels harder to come back
And mentally:
👉 It feels like you’re starting over

This is where many people lose momentum.
Not because they failed--
But because they don’t understand what just happened.

Consistency Isn’t About Perfection
Most people think consistency means:
👉 Never missing
👉 Always staying on track
But real consistency looks different.

It looks like:
👉 Returning faster
👉 Adjusting when needed
👉 Not overreacting to interruptions

Because interruptions are part of the process.
Not a sign that the process isn’t working.

Overreaching Is Often the Real Problem
Another pattern I see:
People try to do too much too soon.

They:
  • Push intensity
  • Try to “make up for lost time”
  • Match what others are doing

And the body isn’t ready for it yet.

That’s when:
  • Small strains happen
  • Fatigue builds
  • Movement quality drops

And eventually--
👉 Something gives

This Is Why Foundation Matters
When your body is:
  • Strong
  • Stable
  • Conditioned
You become more resilient to:
  • Daily life
  • Unexpected movement
  • Physical stress

This isn’t just about workouts.
It’s about:
👉 Being able to live without constant setbacks

A Different Way to Think About Progress
Instead of asking:
“Why can’t I stay consistent?”
A better question is:
👉 “How do I build something I can return to easily?”

That might mean:
  • Doing a little less—but doing it well
  • Leaving room for recovery
  • Building gradually instead of rushing

Because the goal is not to prove something.
It’s to build something that lasts.

You Are Not Starting Over
Every time you pause, adjust, or restart--
You are not back at zero.

Your body remembers.
Your awareness improves.
Your understanding deepens.

Even the setbacks:
👉 Teach you something

This Is the Real Work
Not just showing up when everything is perfect--
But learning how to:
  • Continue
  • Adjust
  • Return

That’s what creates long-term change.
